Dating back to Viking times, peg loom weaving is a mindful and relaxing craft using a board with pegs and warp strings to create rugs and mats, by weaving materials (in this case sheep’s fleece) in rows along the pegs.
A qualified Primary teacher, with a degree in Environmental Science and 20+ years of experience in education. Caitlin is also a sheep farmer and weaver who is passionate about using sheep’s fleece to create beautiful and useable items.
An interesting and interactive experience!
Caitlin will bring all the materials and equipment needed to demonstrate this traditional craft. After a whole class introduction, where children will be encouraged to ask questions, share ideas and observations, Caitlin will then work with small groups of children (around 4 at a time) to teach them how to weave and create your class rug.
At the end of the session Caitlin will complete the rug by tying off the warp strings and you will get to keep it!
Children will get to look at and handle fleece from different breeds of sheep; developing their vocabulary around colour and texture; and increasing their knowledge and understanding of where wool comes from.
They will get to be creative; by contributing to a whole class project they can keep and be proud of. Additionally they will develop their fine motor skills and confidence; by twisting and weaving the fleece repetitively through the pegs and by trying something new and persevering to complete it.
A session with one class (taking approximately 3 hours), including one finished seat-pad rug for you to keep, is £200.
